    Message From The International President

As a steward, you play a very important role within our Brotherhood - you are the conduit to the workers.  The IBEW is a large organization with hundreds of thousands of members.  The International President and International Secretary-Treasurer and their staffs in Washington, D.C., oversee the operation of the international union in the United States and Canada.  The International Vice-Presidents oversee the day-to-day operation of the international union in their respective districts.  International Representatives assist the local unions in negotiations, jurisdictional matters and other ways.  The Business Manager of your local union is responsible for negotiating agreements with employers, organizing the unorganized and managing the affairs of the local union.  But it is your knowledge of the contract and how it should be administered, your capability in dealing with management, and your competence in securing and preserving the rights of fellow members that will determine the workers' perception of the IBEW.

Without your competence and strength, the union is seen as little more than a dues collector; that is, you are the IBEW in the eyes of the members.

While your stewardship carries great responsibility, it likewise affords you an unusual opportunity to make a profound and positive difference in the lives of your fellow workers and their families - and in your own life.

The construction industry today is full of new challenges - some greater than any faced in modern times - as workers seek ways of dealing with the insecurity that new technology, a changing economy and anti-union hostility bring.  No longer can maintaining the status quo serve as an acceptable strategy.  In addition to enforcing the contract, your responsibilities and opportunities include building solidarity among the members and pride in their union and promoting the cause of justice in the workplace.

To expect you to accomplish this without the strength and support of your union would be foolish.  For this reason The IBEW provides Steward Training.  It is designed to provide you with the tools and information you will need to effectively represent the workers on the jobsite.

By agreeing to be a Steward, you have demonstrated your desire to serve your fellow workers.  Because of your motivation and dedication, your fellow members will hold the IBEW, and especially you as its representative, in highest regard.  The good work you do here strengthens the cause of unionism and improves the economic and social well-being of workers everywhere.
